Resolved Question: What do you think needs to be done about China's pollution problem?

It’s no doubt that China is the home to the world’s fastest growing economy. Since the late 1970s, China's economy has developed rapidly and continuously, however not without a price. This rapid industrial development has increased pollution and in turn negatively impacted the health of it’s people. Many of China’s polluted rivers lie in the countryside, where these polluted rivers irrigate the crops that feed the nation. When Sanjay Gupta, as part of CNN Planet in Peril’s team, with went to one of these rural villages to inquire about the polluted water he was confronted by police. Clearly, pollution within China is a touchy subject. Wang Jinnan, one of China’s leading environmental researches is quoted saying “It is a very awkward situation for the country because our greatest achievement is also our biggest burden”. However the statics and the people behind them cannot be ignored. Nearly 500 million people lack access to safe drinking water. The World Bank and China’s own environmental agency, SEPA, estimated that polluted water causes about 60,000 premature deaths each year and is linked to rising cancer rates. Chinese cities often seem wrapped in a toxic gray shroud. Only 1 % of the 560 million people living in the city breathe air considered safe by the European Union. Thanks to air pollution, 400,000 people a year die prematurely to lung disease. In fact, cancer is now China’s leading cause of death. China has 16 of the 20 top most polluted cities. Liukuaizhuang a small village just 120 kilometers south of Beijing. Liukuaizhuang was once a quiet rural village before the economic boom started by Communist reforms in December 18, 1978. Only 20 years later, almost 100 chemical plants and low tech factories are scattered across what used to be farmland. Waste from factories producing rubber, paint, plastic and other chemicals have blackened streams, poisoned farmland and polluted the air, creating deadly pollution clusters that locals call “cancer villages”; Liukuaizhuang being one of many. One in fifty people in the village of Liukuaizhuang have been diagnosed with cancer over the last decade, which is around 25 times higher than the national average. These pollution producing factories are also producing toxic products which are then put on global markets. After companies in China decided to put cheap and toxic alternatives in food, an outburst of pet deaths in the United States and hundreds of people in Panama died from using toxic cough syrup. Recently China had tainted baby milk containing the chemical melamine, which is thought to have caused kidney stones in infants around the world. Taking a step back and looking at China at a whole, it seems that for the past 3 decades China has put economic growth ahead of the environment and health of its people. What do you think needs to be done?  more

Resolved Question: why did large company in foreign countrys have the leaders of those country assassinated?

in the 70's in Bolivia, a American company that i cant remember the name of was taking a lot of land and natural resources from the Bolivian people destroying the economy and causing many problems, when a specific politician in Bolivia which i cant remember his name was elected who promised to make the company leave his country was assassinated by jackles after refusing to negotiate, they covered up the assassination with a plane crash, in panama another indecent like this happend where the leader of that country was killed in a plane crash, and a more recent incident, Saddam Hussein, portrayed by the media as a "terrorist" refused to allow American country's to drill in his country they tried to negotiate with him, and eventually tried to assassinate him or get him overthrown but these failed as he was once hired by the us government to help overthrow a previous leader and knew all the tactics and techniques used, eventually the us government fabricated some evidence and invaded his country thus captureing and hanging him.... these acts are done simply for the money, but why, isn't America about freedom or is that what your thought to think, what your brainwashed to believe  more

Voting Question: As a Republican, are you enjoying telling Democrats "we told you so"?

I am so glad that the Democrats are crashing and burning. By 2010, this will have been the shortest majority in Congress ever. Obama has already outspent Bush in less than 2 months on the job, and the Democrats are lock step behind him. My hubby, who fought and was wounded in Panama, is feeling that all his efforts to keep America safe were in vain, since Obama and the Democrats (starting with Clinton) ruined our economy. My hubby is a good man, and doesnt deserve to be harassed by anti-American Democrats. He was blown up in Panama, which is why he doesnt have eyebrows, they never grew back.  more

Resolved Question: Do libs realize how badly a president has to screw up to lose reelection like Jimmy Carter?

Americans know Bush didn't lie, he relied on information provided by 3 independent intelligence agencies and got approval from congress. We had no further attacks on US soil in the 7 years since 9/11, free elections are now held in Iraq, nobody is tortured for sport there anymore, and we had a good economy up until libs took control 2 years ago. With Carter we had gas rationing and waited in long lines around the block to buy it, imposition of a 55 mph national speed limit, double digit unemployment, double digit inflation, +20% interest rates, 52 American hostages held by Iran for 444 days (freed finally by Reagan), and he gave away control of the Panama Canal, now controlled by China. Voters couldn't wait to kick him out the very first chance they got, yet we still see libs asking if Bush was the worst. Seems to me the votes cast by millions trumps a few mamas basement dwelling YA posters, hm? ck4829, we had a record number of attacks on US interests under Clinton, the USS Cole, the marine base bombing in Beruit, the first attack on the WTC, I could go on.  more

Resolved Question: The Economic Plan of the century?

Hi I am a teenager who is very interested in politics and, lately, the economy. I love the idea of just rebuilding America to create a better place with many jobs. So I was studying the Northwest Passage and I thought, Wow, we have spent hundreds of years before searching for this Northwest Passage, and with the technology now, why don't we make our own? Yes, the Panama Canal is a great thing, but it would be so much easier to Transfer foreign goods THROUGH The United States. Think about this, you link to main ports together. Elizabeth Port in New Jersey, one of the most busiest ports in the world, and the Port of Los Angeles, another busy port ont the west coast. If you connect existing rivers or even make an entirely new canal that cuts through America, you could do so much. This would create millions upon millions of jobs and help American families greatly. This would also create major cities, with tributaries that if purified, could provide water of power for these cities. It would help trade greatly, and can reshape our economy. This would be such a huge project it would probably create a whole new economy in America and throughout the world. I am sure people can add on to this theory, so I want to put this out there. I will take thoughts and any ideas to add on to make this plan better. I want to help our country, and I believe a plan like this would help.  more

Resolved Question: I really need some advice on a horrible situation..?

Okay, so about 6 or so months ago my parents and my sisters moved out of the country to Panama so that my parents could start a business here after all of their business crashed in Florida where we're from thanks to the economy. Since we've been here we have been trying to learn spanish while they work on getting their business running. I have no friends here, I do school (sophomore yr) online so I have no way of make friends here, and I feel like I really have no reason to be here at all besides being here for my parents. I usually am an incredibly optimistic person, never complaining, always going with the flow. But over the past few weeks , it's just been really hard to deal with everything. I feel like i'm stuck and I have NOBODY to turn to. My whole life is back in Florida and while ive been here I have had to watch all my friends seperate from me and leave me behind. I just feel so stuck and I can't talk to my parents about it because they've been trying sooo hard to get everything going smoothly here and they're trying so hard that i can't bring myself to telling them how unhappy I am here and how I wish I was home. My oldest sister is almost 18 and I know that as soon as her birthday comes she's going to leave to be with her boyfriend, so talking to her about it is basically pointless. I feel like i have no other options in any ways, like i'm just wasting time being here as i watch my life pass me by. Maybe i'm being dramatic or w/e but I don't want this, at all, and it's depressing going on myspace and facebook seeing everybody posting pics with their friends having a life like I shuld be doing but I can't. What should I do ??? How can I make it better???? I'm coming to you guys because I have nobody else to turn to. Just give me some advice or anything you can think of that mite help me, please. Ive thought about taking like a dance class or jus somethin simple so i can meet people but, were tight on money sometimes and i dnt wana ask my parents for too much so they feel guilty, and the language barrier thing really limits my options on doing anything here..  more

Resolved Question: Should I stay or should I go?

So about a month ago, I moved from Panama City, FL to Edison, NJ. My sister and I moved because my sister wanted to be with her boyfriend who has his own place. Due to family complications, we can't move in with him. I am currently staying at a Days Inn with my sister. New Jersey is crowded and the highways and interstates can be a headache. NYC is pretty cool but it didn't really awe and inspire me. I was actually pretty underwhelmed overall. I wanted to move to Vancouver, WA instead. What my question is: After finding a job that I actually enjoyed and a somewhat steady pay, a week or 2 later I got fired for no good reason (American Apparel's at will employment.) I have no friends here, at times I can be a 3rd wheel and I'm starting to miss my friends back in FL who were the best people I have ever met in my life. I was too distracted from moving out and being independent. Since I have no job and I'm getting my paycheck soon. Should I move back to FL? My parents just got divorced and my dad moved to another city and my mom is with a friend. This leaves an empty house. My other sister is living there and is taking over the bills. I could move home and get a lower paying job due to Panama City's economy and be with my real friends and go back to school and still be independent. So should I move back home or get over my loss and find another job and make new friends and work out a new life here in New Jersey? "True happiness is shared with others." P.S. I'm pretty broke too.  more

Voting Question: Whats the big deal about JFK?

I was watching a tv show about politics & debates of the past. One of the last clips they showed was from Dan Quayle in I believe 1988 where the democratic VP said some nonsense about how he knew JFK, how JFK was his friend, how Jfk was so great & how Dan Quayle was no jfk. That got me thinking about what was so special about JFK & I realized I couldn't think of a single policy or event that really matter during his presidency. All I know about JFK is he fought in WW2, was rammed, lost his boat & supposedly swam a mile or so with a wounded boat-mate, was assassinated, failed at killing Castro, tried invaded cuba, failed to over throw him & invade cuba, the cuban missile crisis. His increasing the troops in vietnam because LBJ thought it was time to fight the commies, and of course how Marilyn Monroe & how JFK was a womanizer & disrespected the values of marriage & religion. No other policy or event comes to mind so my question is besides those I've name can someone honestly tell me what's so special about JFK and what a policy was that actually affected anyone? My point is there's not a lot to his presidency & it seems like we only know him because he was assassinated. I just don't see what's so special about him or why even today democrats make such a big to-do. Reagan ended the cold war, Bush 1 had Iraq invasion of Kuwait, Panama & Noriega, Haiti & for a while somalia. Clinton had all the terrorist attacks he let go & monica. Carter had the iran embassy & oil embargo & the failed rescue as well as negiotiating with terrorists. Bush W has 9/11, Katrina's failure, Afganistan & Iraq 2 & now the economy even if it was bound to happen & a result of 20 years of various policies. LBJ had the vietnam war & his increasing that to over 500,000 troops yet having to tuck tail. So what policies or events other then the few I named earlier is JFK known for & how did the policy benefit the greater good?  more

Resolved Question: Is there any safe haven in the coming new world order?

Now that the Congress is on the verge of finalizing a bailout of epic proportions, this appears to be a clear sign that the U.S. economy will experience a full collapse. My first inclination is to grin and bear it and realize most of us will just have to live in poverty and gut things out for a few years. Other calamities are possible. The question is, is ANY place a good refuge right now? I'm guessing Switzerland would be okay, but I'm not wealthy and I know they have one of the highest costs of living. I might feel safer there, but I'd probably still feel impoverished. And I'm not certain that they are any more receptive to immigrants (which is what I would be) than we are right now. I know a lot of expats are living in Costa Rica, Panama, and Peru, but I'm not confident they will weather this global economic meltdown any better. Any thoughts on this?  more

Resolved Question: For Being Crazy and all...Who Thinks Hugo Chavez May Have Something?

In his idea to make an American Union. The European Union is extremely strong and have gotten nations in Europe that were known to have terrible economies, like Greece into strong working economies. Through, powerhouse nations like England,Spain, France, and Germany the European continent has realized its true potential and even nations not in the union, like Moldova (the poorest nation in Europe) has improved through EU aide. Anyways, I realize Chavez is psychotic and problems of power would arise btwn this. But, what if we were to vote on the 4 countries that would chair the AU. I would suspect that it would be, United States Canada Venezuela - To Appease Chavez and they have a large petroleum sector. Brazil - Venezuela would be happy they have a fellow socialist nation and the canadiens get along with everyone so they wouldnt have a problem and the US doesnt have problems with Brazil. The caribbean already is ahead of the Americas as the have CARICOM. Anyways, the problems would arise in: 1.) The United States - Cuba, Mexico, and Argentina - This could finally bring an end to the problems Cuba and the US have had because Cuba would have Venezuela, Brazil, Canada, and Argentina all Cuban allies. 2.) Argentina - US & Chile 3.) Venezuela - Colombia and US The rest of the countries get a long and if we surround the AU with allies of certain countries they would be less hesitant to join. And maybe we can have a stronger continent and bring an end to all the violence and poverty happening in Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and the rest of Central America w/ the exception of Costa Rica and Panama or as I like to call the region The Poor Man of the Americas. England and Iceland are in the EU and they refused to give up their currency we could still have the dollar and im sure canada would keep the dollar and the rest can go on the peso. And England and Iceland do not have any restrictions.  more

Resolved Question: Democrats Only....Who Are The Top 5 Democratic Presidents, Top 3 Republican Presidents, and Top 5 Other?

Mine... Democrats: 1.) Andrew Jackson - I read up on his history, he lived a very interesting life and did a lot for America, like serving as General in the War of 1812, developing the spoils system, shutting down the early banks of the us which were corrupted and being the founder of our party. 2.) FDR - His socialist plans and angencies still exist to this day not to mention brought us out of a decade long great depression. 3.) Bill Clinton - Hands down the best President of my lifetime. The economy was very strong and he handled international disputes the civil way by means of UN Diplomacy ie the Balkan Wars as opposed to sending our troops into peril while losing billions $ in the process ie Iraq 4.) Lyndon Johnson - Even though he gets a bad rap for the Vietnam War he did the best he could in a tough situation. I blame Vietnam on JFK because he aided and sided with the violent dictator who massacred millions of Buddhist monks in Diem spurring the anger from Ho Chi Mihn and the Vietcong and the Cold War and Missile Crisis made US-USSR Relations even worse, which had a major contribution to Vietnam. And that would not fair well for LBJ when he assumed office. I honestly think JFK was not a great president and he is revered more for his assasination. Also LBJ probably had the best Domestic Plan than any other US President he did more for Civil Rights than any other president did and accepted MLK Jr with open arms to eat lunch with him after JFK refused MLK that honor when he was president. The Great Society and LBJ get thumbs up. 5.) Woodrow Wilson - Had the tough task of being president during WWI, as president he established the League of Nations - which in turn led to the foundation of the UN where nations would peacufully work out agreements as opposed to be at each others neckk all the time. i know its not perfect, but can you imagine the chaos without this. He also made the income tax and Federal Reserve. Republicans (Very few) 1.) Theodore Roosevelt - Like Andrew Jackson lived a fascinating life and did a lot for our country. He is the only militaristic president I like cause he did it with the best intentions and never actually used our military physically. ie...he helped Cuba and Panama win independence that was a good cause to use an army and in the Russo-Japanese War he ended it by saying he would use the Navy if both sides cant settle the disputes and the dispute was settled and no need to use navy. 2.) Ronald Reagan - The only modern Republican I respect he was a good President and served in office with the publics best intentions in mind. 3.) Abraham Lincoln - He served our nation through its most difficult time (A Civil War) is never good. however, I do not believe he was the great liberator of slavers history would like us to believe. Yes, the Emancipation Proclaimation officially ended slavery, which was great. But, Lincoln only outlawed slavery in the states that were in the Confederacy and left it up to popular sovereignty in the Border States that were part of the Union. He really wasnt a staunch opposer of slavery, yet did the right thing and kept our country together through this time. George Washington, John Adams, James Madison, James Monroe = "The Founding Fathers" : Thes guys are the cornerstone to what the USA stands for today. You are not a true patriotic w/o idolizing these brilliant men that gave their all in forming and maintaing this nation 5.) Millard Fillmore - Whig; I lik him cause he is random, and he opened trade w/ the Empire of Japan, which had their ports closed to foreigners for hundreds of years. I know the Trail of Tears....but thats one misfortune of Andrew Jackson. Napoleon killed millions of people and he is idolized. And lol no Jimmy is a great guy just doesnt have presidential quality in him.  more
